Coldplay Settles Joe Satriani Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

Saturday, September 19 2009

The copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Joe Satriani against the British band Coldplay in December was settled on Tuesday, the former's rep confirmed.

In retrospect, Satriani openly claimed that the number one hit "Viva La Vida" was just a rip off from his 2004 song, "If I Could Fly."

Another artist felt similarly with Satriani. Cat Stevens, who is now known as Yusuf Islam, also said that his 1973's song "Foreigner Suite" sounded so close to Coldplay's first single off their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. But later on, Stevens changed his mind. He was even willing "to sit down and have a cup of tea with them and let them know it's okay," stating that the musical similarities were not intentional.
