The growth of technology has taken stand-up comedy far away from the stage. Present day comedians are resorting to Twitter to spread their jokes to more and more people. In doing this, they face the job of fitting their jokes in 140 characters. But, they seem to have gladly accepted the challenge.
In the run are well-known comedians like John Heffron and Craig Shoemaker. They are making use of the Twitterverse, the language of Twitter, to cater to the humor of their followers.
In an interview with CNN, Shoemaker said that he is learning and has little number of friends on Twitter for whom he writes. However, since he is a storyteller and has to crunch his ideas into one-liners of 140 words, he is not quite sure who laughs at those jokes. He will be judging his success on Twitter by the replies he get.
Almost the same thing with Heffron, he has to make people know that what he is writing IS a joke. "Like I put something about my ex-wife that I got divorced and 'tonight's show is a benefit show and all proceeds go to my ex-wife.' And people are writing back, 'Oh, I feel so sorry for you,' and I go, 'No, it's a joke.'".
