As reported by the Associated Press, Elton John and his partner David Furnish can hardly adopt the Ukrainian orphan, Lev, who is 14 months old.
A Ukrainian family minister said that based on their country's law, unmarried couples and same-sex partners are not allowed to adopt. Moreover, the parents should not be over 45 years older than the child. John is now 62.
The only possible way for the singer and his partner to bring Lev home is an approval from Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. However, it was revealed on Monday that the law of Ukrain would only permit the couple from adopting Lev if they would also adopt the orphan's brother.
