Mark Sanford, Governor of South Carolina, admitted having an extramarital affair in Buenos Aires when he was officially said to be in the Appalachian Trail. The Governor made this declaration on Wednesday, only some days after his staff said that he was away hiking.
Speaking to the media at a conference in Columbia, the Governor said, "I've been unfaithful to my wife." His voice was choking and breaking at times with emotions. "I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina," he said.
Sanford had began a good friendship with the Argentine woman since eight years. But from last year, the relation had developed into "something much more than that".
He apologized to his wife and four boys and his staff. Safeguarding his team he said, "I want to make absolutely clear that over the past two days at no time did anyone on my staff intentionally relay false information to state officials or the public at large."
Mark Sanford also stated that it has been five months since his wife had found out about the affair.
