Guillermo del Toro will no longer direct 'The Haunted Mansion'

Monday, August 23 2010

I was informed last week that Guillermo del Toro will direct a remake of the comedy-horror The Haunted Mansion. It seems that my information's were bad, because the filmmaker said recently that his involvement in this project is confined to activities of writer and producer.

"I would be happy to direct this remake, but I'm now preparing for another movie which I will formally announce in the coming weeks," told the filmmaker to Latino Review.

We can only speculate on the edge of this mysterious project: Del Toro testified repeatedly that his dream is to adapt At the Mountains of Madness (original text signed by HP Lovecraft), and as one of the current plan is to direct his own version of the novel Frankenstein.

Regarding The Haunted Mansion, the filmmaker said he would try some mix-up between humor and horror aspects:

"I'll not follow in the footsteps of Eddie Murphy's comedy ... we are not making a comedy ... you can prepare for something fun, but scary. Dark imagery is an essential part of the legacy of Walt Disney.

Do not forget that Disney itself is responsible for some downright characters - think of Chernabog from Fantasia or at the evil Queen from Snow White. "
