by Joe Halls

Katie Holmes, whose husband Tom Cruise watched her in the audience, joined Broadway costar Dianne Wiest in presenting the story of Staff Sargent Jose Pequeno at the 20th annual PBS Memorial Day Concert.

Staff Sargent Pequeno has become disabled after serving in Iraq. As they paid tribute to the officer, Holmes played the role of Pequeno's sister Elizabeth while Wiest assumes his mother Nelly.

Holmes chronicled, 'It was touch and go for a long time. But then one day we were in the rehab gym while the physical therapists were stretching him. Maybe it hurt a little bit and all of a sudden he came out with, 'Mom.' We just burst out into tears. According to the doctors this wasn't supposed to happen.'

The event, which commemorated the struggles of the American soldiers, was broadcast live at the West Lawn of the National Mall.
