Maria Shriver's Take on Alzheimer's Disease

Maria Shriver's Take on Alzheimer's Disease

Thursday, May 7 2009

by Joe Halls

Being the wife of California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and as part of the Kennedy clan, Maria Shriver still has some woes and imperfections.

She said, "I don't have it all together… the road is bumpy, and I don't have any shame in sharing that. I find that people are so grateful that you say, 'Well, I'm having a very difficult time with my parents getting older.' Or, 'My parents are struggling and I'm struggling, too.'"

"I would say I've had a character transformation with both of my parents," Shriver continued. Her 87-year-old mom already underwent several strokes while her father has Alzheimer's disease.

Abreast of her experience with her father's illness, she co-executive produced The Alzheimer's Project which will air on HBO this weekend. "I think anybody in their 50s or 60s or 70s should be concerned that they're going to get Alzheimer's, whether you have a loved one with it or not. Everybody should be terrified," said the wife of Schwarzenegger.
